Bamboo Rafting in Periyar Tiger Reserve

Bamboo rafting is one of the preferred program in periyar tiger reserve and one must not miss it too.  Bamboo rafting is a full day program from morning 8AM to 5PM, only one batch with 15 participants, 6 watchers and one armed guard.  We need to book this rafting atleast one day before in person or by send Demand Draft from remote places. Cost for the program is INR 1500 per person which includes rafting, trekking, breakfast and lunch.  We have reached thekkady on sep 29th morning and booked the rafting for 30th.
30th Morning we have reached the boat house inside park.   We got instructions and leech socks,  around 8AM everyone registered for the rafting gathered,  only we three are the indians in that batch, one of the watcher said this program is mostly pre booked by foreigners.   If they open the registration online we could see more indians register for this program, the only draw back is it does not have online registration.
From boat house we crossed a small water body to enter the forest side, from their we need to walk two kilometers to reach the base camp for rafting,  camp site for tiger trail in also there.   We started chit chat with the watcher and started to base camp,  we got lot of information about the place and mullaiperiyar dam on the way under the drizzle.

We had breakfast at the tiger trail camp and started our rafting session in three rafts, 5 participants and two watchers in each raft,  mostly watcher rows the raft if we are interested we can also row.  Rafting is on periyar lake farmed my mullaiperiyar dam,  lake is with full of sub merged trees, these sub merged trees increases the beauty of the lake and also makes it dangerous for swimming and boating as they may cause injuries.   Once these were plain lands before construction of mullaiperiyar dam,  now most of the place is sub merged in water and the trees are sub merged in water for more than 116 years and still surviving in the water.
Until 12PM we roamed many places but could not spot any wild animals, so watchers decided to takes to the forest walk once again,  we walked deep into the forest still no luck except elephant trails.  We came back to lake, had lunch and rested for sometime.  Mean while watchers gave lot of stories happened in the rafting before,  one week before a batch was chased by few elephants.   Most of the animals comes to lake for water, since it is raining and water might be available near by their habitation so they are not showing up in lake.  With fur-station of not seen any animals we started back to tiger trail camp.
3PM we came back to tiger trail camp, tied our rafts to the trees in the water and started back to starting point.  After a short walk,  we saw some elephants and bison standing some 200mts away,  we all became so happy,  in sometime they went into the forest.
There are two different season to visit the wildlife, one during the monsoon to experience full green forest and other during early summer, during this time water sources inside the forest run out of water so many wild animals comes to lake, so this time will be best for animal spotting.   We will plan a trip during late feb or march once again.

Valley of Flowers Trek - Paradise on Earth

Butterfly trail, Valley of flowers
Aug 12th: Myself, Ananad anna and Bharani met fellow trekkers at the haridwar railway station in the morning and started to Govindghat in a cab arranged by indiahikes,  our group was around 30 people,  no wonder why so many people inspired to go.  8AM we kicked off the day,  recently there were heavy rains in chamoli area and roads were closed for few days and opened recently,  right after Rishikesh the road gets its beauty, the road follow the path of ganga, yeah most of the destinations are to one of the ganga starting place, so simply follow ganga to reach the destination.  Start to end was with full of breathtaking valley views, some landslides and not to forget the green blanket  all over the mountains due to recent rains.  Around 7PM we have reached Govindghat, met our trek leader Dhinesh and his team Mahi and Vishwanath, before conclude the day we received some info about the trek, instruction on how to be safe on the way.
Landslide due to recent rain
Aug 13th: Morning started our trek to ghangaria from gurudwara at govindghat after our final and important purchase walking stick, it is advised to carry a good hiking pole but you know our mentality right :)  Since ghangaria is also midway to Hemkund we had lot of hemkund pilgrim enroute to ghangaria, there were lot of tuck shops on the way to munch and regain energy, even some of the pilgrims were offering glucose and chocolates, trekking is not only the option to reach to reach ghangaria but most prefered and enjoyable one,  the other once are ponny, small kids were carried in the baskets and frequent helicopter shuttle between govindghat to ghangaria. This trek route goes along side of alaknanda, it is one of the headstream for ganga,  stream sound cheers you throughout the trek,  cleanliness on the path is to be appreciated even though so much of ponny goes by still it is maintained neatly by volunteers, don’t hesitate to offer some to them.  After 1PM climate started changing dramatically, it was full sunshine day so far, then only we realised we were supposed to reach ghangaria by 1PM because rains were expected in the afternoon but we totally forgot and spend time at the streams and falls.   All fun over even there is no views, clouds already closed all of it, we started non stop walk to destination, just before 3 km to ghangaria the path switches from left side of river to right side, from here the trek got little tough,  path got little steep and rain was little heavy.  Since morning i’ve been looking some good little stream to take long exposure, i’ve not seen one since morning but that type came now, it was raining and we were late, still my bro insisted we will take,  we let bharani go and only we both stayed we shot what we want, thanks bro for the umbrella cover :)  After all those crazy things we have reached ghangaria at 5PM.  We were behind the schedule but where's the fun if we don’t get to spend time at beautiful places. Vishwanath already reached ghangaria, arranged our stay and dinner in one hotel.  Day 1, we have covered 13km  and gained 4000 feet altitude.
Under the umbrella
14th:  Most awaited day of the trip, according our schedule we are supposed to go to natural wonderland Valley of Flowers, VoF is natural botanical garden with valley full of flowers with more than 500 species,  the valley is covered in snow for most of the year, it opens itself only from june to october, july mid to august mid being the best season with little bit of risk factors like rain and landslides, during this time weather is 100% unpredictable, even the same threat applies in reaching govind ghat from haridwar, we believed in our luck and decided to go in august mid, so far the weather acted like a good friend to us but lately behaving otherwise, over the night it was full pouring, dhinesh was not sure of the condition of VoF trail, he had already sent someone to check on the condition, if otherwise we will go to hemkund and try our luck next day stating if it continues rains we may not get good visibility of the valley.  We all kept our hopes on high and waited for the rain to stop, probably i would not have done that in bangalore this year.
By 6:30 rain stopped completely and clear blue sky welcomed us to the VoF,  from the entrance trail goes for more than 10kms, we planned to reach as much as possible by mid day and return.  For first 3 kms we could find some new flowers sparsely scattered then came the butterfly trail, both the sides with full of pink flowers,  slowly mist also started flowing in the valley, nice feeling it was.  Before we went to VoF, i’ve searched for videos of the valley mainly timelapse,  yeah timelapse is one of my fav. technique, it shows something happening in front of the eyes in different angle, even eyes can’t catch that but i’ve not found much so i thought of making some during my trip,  butterfly trail, people and mist looked awesome choice for it,  i climbed on a rock to get the full view and took my first video, then we crossed a glacier, we got glimpse of full valley from that point.  We crossed the valley bit by bit, every 100/200m we found a new flower, we started to return back at 1PM sticking to plan,  we could have reached 6 kms before our return.  Best things about the day are blue poppy, pink flower(androsace porancllias), mist.  The most interesting and curious thing is valley contains 1000s of 1000s of flowers but none of them have aroma absolutely no aroma,  the whole places is very colorful but sometimes it makes you think are the flowers real?
Himalayan blue poppy,  hill decorator

If we get of the trail and walk inside then we can find different flowers and new angles, definitely one day is not enough to cover the whole trail and explore,  we need at least 3 days.  Hopefully indiahikes will conduct 3days or more days expedition trip to VoF in the future for enthusiasts.  Unlike ghangaria round there is pony in VoF.  Few trekkers missed the VoF due to illness and few were telling it is tough for them to climb hemkund.  We took a final count by dinner who all are want to trek, who are all going by pony and people who are going to VoF, finally it came to 9 people who wanted to hike to hemkund, we decided to start the as early as possible.

Aug 15th: Morning 6AM we started to climb the hemkund,  hemkund is 6 km from ghangaria and nearly 4000feet above ghangaria.  It was very steep climb,  we gradually started to climb with regular breaks.  As we go up and up, the places got more beautiful,  after 4 km we crossed a glacier and a falls which originates from the hemkund lake.   From that point we could see the full valley until now the path was covered with trees and the mountains was decorated with Bhrama kamal, it grows at 12K and above altitude only,  which gave us rough idea how much we have climbed so far.   The second hill decorator was blue poppy,  it is one of very beautiful and colorful flower on the valley,  we could see more blue poppies in hemkund than VoF.  Right after waterfalls, there was two ways, one is very steep & short and another one is long, laid mostly for ponies to go easily, we took the steep one, half through we saw the flag on gurudwara which boosted our energy by indicating destination not so far.  We have reached the top around 10:30AM, there are many things to be cheered for once reached the top, first  we have successfully reached the peak, the lake at 15K altitude and tea & kichidi served at the gurudwara :)   Hemkund was almost covered in cloud, we had no choice but to wait for the full view, meanwhile we decided to took the dip in the coldest hemkund lake,  yeah it was crazy yet amazing experience.   Climate was awesome,  clouds was moving very fast,  sometime with full of clouds sometimes full clear,  We spent sometime and started back.

Next day morning we have started back to govind ghat and reached govind ghat around 12PM,  we refreshed and relaxed at the hotel arranged by indiahikes.   Our trek with indiahikes ended here with happy note.   Some of the fellow trekkers had plan to goto mana and badrinath like we had,  we grouped together and left to mana around 3PM.

Mullayanagiri to Deviramma betta Trek - Misty Mountains

I got a trek invite from Wild Wanderers Adventure Sports on facebook,  I was actually looking for some trek to kick of this monsoon, this looked good and accepted it, i know WW though Vikas, he also showed interest in the trek.  This is my first time trek with Wild Wanderers,  I was thrilled and awaited for the friday to come.
Mullayanagiri to Baba Budan Giri ridge
Friday evening i've joined the wild wanderers at MG Road, we have collected other fellows from different pickup points and started to chikmagalur,  Saturday morning around 7AM we have reached chikmagalur town,  we freshened up and had breakfast in the town and started to base.  Our initial plan was to start from Manikadhara -> Devirammana betta -> Manikadhara -> Bababuddangiri -> Mullayanagiri but most the people wanted to start from Sarpathari to Mullayanagiri, so the whole plan is reversed and sarpathari is also added to list.  The best about the organizers is that they changes the plans according the group, which gives a feel like we are not going in some package trip instead friends organized trip,  in the whole group only 4 are new to the WW,  rest of them already trekked together before, overall we were 18 people group.

Around 10AM we have started from Sarpathari gate to Mullayanagiri top,  Mullayanagiri is the highest peak in Karnataka,  I've climbed this peak once in 2009 from the same point, so i know it is bit difficult but can be done,  hardly after 15 mins of start, i started feeling vomiting sense and i was not able to walk a bit, probably because of ghats drive or my body is not used to breakfast and all of a sudden i ate breakfast and started to trek,  i was slowing the group speed, so Vikas, chandu and prashanth stayed with me and rest moved forward,  until the whole breakfast came out i almost lost the confidence that i can finish the trek but Chandu and Prashanth was very friendly and trying to motivate and divert the topic to get the confidence back,  they literally pushed me to walk bit by bit, by the time i got rid of the vomiting feeling and we have almost reached the top and not far behind the group, at one point i thought of abandon the trek and go back to town, atleast others will do the trek on time, thanks to those three who walked slowly with me and pushed me up.

View from top of Mullayanagiri
Temperature at chikmagalur was around 30 deg and so is at the Sarpathari, but half through the peak it started cooling down,  at the top it was very pleasant,  it was covered with mist even at around noon, it was so refreshing,  we took a break at the top,  We all filled our water bottles at the temple in the top,  naturally cooled water.   I have recollected all my energy after the bad start and got ready for the ridge walk to Baba budan giri. Chandu once said the idea of starting club came while on trekking in Mullayanagiri, it is a memorable place for WW founders.

Ridge walk towards Babu budan giri was little long but not that much tiring,  views from the ridge was amazing,  a relaxed walk along the ridge seeing both mountains and plains,   Just before blade walk we took the lunch break,  had the thepla we carried for lunch.   Thepla remained me of my cousins and my first encounter of thelpa during my cousin marriage.

After lunch we started to the blade walk,  blade walk is little tough and risky so we need to get permission before in hand for trekking, there is a check post just in front of the starting point,  so we can't enter with out being noticed, we went as part of registered adventure club, we have signed wavers before the trip and our guys speaking skills got us the permission to trek in the blade walk.   It took some half an hour to the complete stretch, it has only few feet wide to walk for and both sides are very steep, especially the one on the plains side,  one of the highlight of the trip is blade walk, some places gave very adventures views and experience.

Right after the blade walk, few of us were tired, we were looking for the ending point of today's trek, someone said hill with the satellite tower is Baba budan giri, we looked for it only one tower was visible, we have finalized the target and started the walk, by look it is just behind the hill in front of us,  we have walked little fast as the ending point is near,  once we climbed the hill, still the tower is at same distance behind one more hill, ok climbed that too, still the tower is far away but atleast we were able to confirm it just two hills away.   We took a small break and continued to our day 1 final point, we have reached the tower at around 5:30, mist also started coming down,  slowly the mist is covering the tower from top.

Our second day itinerary is to go to deviramma betta peak,  so we have decided to camp near manikyadhara falls, luckily there were some small shops opened were we can have tea and bread omelet,  generally they close by sunset since we camped near by the shop they opened it till night and they agreed to open in the early morning before we start our trek.

Second day morning we planned for early morning trek and view sunrise from deviramma betta peak, but since last day evening 6PM only the whole place is covered with heavy mist and pretty cold,  so we changed our plan to start after the sunrise as the visibility also very less,  after our tea and breakfast session at the shop we started the trek at around 9AM,  still sun is not visible sometime sun looks like moon because of the heavy mist,  it was very steep descent from manikyadhara and again steep ascent to reach the peak,  after descent we have to take left, it takes us to the different view point,  deviramma betta is one separated hill from the rest of the range, so it gives a very different view of the Ghats,  mist also descents from the range and goes into the plains, the place is very dynamic fight between sun and mist happens here, sometimes full mist sometimes full sunny, i've taken on time lapse to show how the mist falls from the range and goes into the plains.
We spent sometime in the top and trekked back to manikyadhara.  Before we start back to bangalore, we settled the bill in the small shop, can you guess how many tea's we had overall? 110 tea, that explains how cold the place is and how desperate we are to have something hot.

It was full entrainment trip both by the nature and the group.   It was a nice group to spend time with,  almost everyone knows each other and well organized.  Looking forward to explore more with more wild wanderers.

How to name it? I saw god

Most awaited concert started with Bhavatharini singing the Janani Janani song composed by Isaignani, she dedicated that to her mother.  There was some 20 violin musicians seated in the stage, how to name it is based on violin, that increased the expectation even more.  Anil Srinivasan pianist took over the dais to give introduction about each track going to be played, technical insights and some memorable instances,  An expert from the field is taking the dais and some of the great musicians ready to rock, What else can you expect?.  Anil started the introduction with Raja sir's signature tune from Nayagan 'ting ta ting ta ting ti ting' on his piano and with a humble note 'no one can speak about raja sir's composition other than his composition' followed by few other tunes and introduced the first track of the day 'Do anything', even before we realized it is so magical two track was over,  still Rajesh vaidhya did not played a bit, here comes the Anil with some big introduction for someone named Ambi Subramaniam a violinist, in his words 'I entered the recording studio one day, everyone standing outside was taking about the violinist playing inside the studio with great respect and proud,  i wondered who that is and imagined some big figure and entered the studio, i was astonished to see a small kid playing violin' with that introduction a small boy entered the stage with a violin and the track going to be played is 'How to name it?' the title track itself,  everyone puzzled, is he going to play the title track which can make even some of the great violinist run for their money.  Ambi silently took his violin, tuned it and gave signal that he his ready,  with lot of expectation and questions around "how to name it?" started,  this track contains both violin and veenai parts in it, so Ambi and Rajesh Vaidhya had their chances to show what they can to with the strings,  with in few seconds only Ambi answered all the question everyone had in their minds, he was so elegant with the violin, he swayed away everyone with the beauty of the violin.  It was like a summer rain, a cold breeze in the hot summer.

Followed by Study of Violin,  which is mix of two different melodies from Indian Classical and Western Classical synced together, Ambi played one melody and another melody was played by Aditya Ganesh another youngster on the stage just 15 years old.  Followed by 'Mad Mod Mood Fugue', Anil gave some information about the what is fugue,  a fugue is a compositional technique in two or more voices, built on a subject that is introduced at the beginning in imitation and recurs frequently in the course of the composition,  Anil said he could count only 6 such voices in the 'Mad Mod Mood Fugue', only the Raja sir can say how many such different voices exist in that track,  very soon two violin started playing different melody, then joins the Brass, drums, keyboard, cello, violin orchestra they all are playing together but different songs, some plays very melody but others are at high tempo but still it was nice treat to ears, it was like 'cold breeze, tornado, heavy rain, drizzle, thunder storm, hot sun, moon light attacks you at the same time yet feel pleasant', one of the best track ever.  With technical details walkthrough, all the tracks were performed and all done, then only people came back to their conscious, Magic of Raja sir's music took all of us to a different world, i've never seen such a crowd, all were tied to their seats for the complete 90 mins, i've been to many concerts, were people used to come after the concerts start and they go for break in between but for this concert everyone came before the start, settled and waited very calmly and nobody moved a inch until it ends, such an amazing crowd, it also shows how they loved the music and how devoted they are to Raja sir.

The most awaited celebrity of the day Ilaiyaraaja was asked to come on the stage, though i don't believe in multi god worship but i do believe in multi gods when it comes to the world of music, certainly Raja sir is one of them, my heart was bouncing in joy to see him in such a close distance, the legend who took the music to next level, i'm seeing him live, wow what a moment.  He was asked how he composed these tracks and what was running in his minds, Raja sir's reply is simple "Music should happen, it should not be planned, if it is planned from what we know it will be limited to the boundaries of what we know", in between Anil mentioned Raja sir's favorite Ragam is Kalyani since he used that in most of the songs and they come out well, Raja sir countered gave short story to explain how a singers talent varies the songs so every tune get its color based on not only the raagam but also the singers variations.  Everyone started pleading for a song from Raja sir, initially he refused but later in few mins he gave a start to a song called "sada sada unnai ninaindhu" with little bit of veenai support from Rajesh,  it was a great treat for everyone.  When asked how he imagined and used  indian classical in this album 'Thiyagaraja rhythms are not only for Bhajans, when he composed them he was at his late 20's,  so if you ask me to use thiyagaraja keerthanai it will come out as light music only'.  Raja sir concluded his speech by pointing out some commonality between him and Johann Sebastian Bach,  like how they fought in their early life even to go for the concert they liked and the relationship between their elder brother,  In initial days life of Raja sir's, he was not allowed even to touch the harmonium which his elder brother  had, even he was beaten sometimes but the harmonium which he posses today is his brother's same harmonium and also he said 'music has no boundaries like Western, Indian or any'

I always used to think to say food tastes good or bad you don't need to know how to cook which may be correct for cooking but not for music without basic knowledge about music we might miss  little little beauty in the music,  which Anil and Raja sir's insight explanation about the tracks proved to me.  It doesn't mean i'm going to learn music but atleast listen to experts review and advices to understand music better.  Definitely How to name it? is going to be a chapter in the history of music by sincere devote of  Isaignani.

My Thoughts My Vision My Life - 2

Time seems to exist when no one is around

Why should i suffer by following rules for someone who doesn't even know that there are rules

Money is needed to enjoy my life and to have a good future,  i'm interested in save some but not at the cost of today's happiness

Who should make decisions for me?  it's myself only because i know the needs, capacity and the satisfaction point.

1st Apr 12: Today after a long time i've entered madras railway station, when the train just started all relatives who came to send off their loved ones stared waving, which reminded me about many of my long trips in train.  My first long trip in train and trip to north india was in 2002, i wasn't very prolific in english and i had no idea what is hindi but still my parent allowed me to go to allahabad for my SSB interview.  Important thing is i've never stayed away from home not even for few days without my parents but this time far away and alone for more than a week.  What we call it is guts or desperate times?

Bond between employees and employees empowerment is always powered by bitching the boss

Thank god for giving us wonderful memory, through which i'm reliving the best moments of my life

I don't know lord Shiva exists but i do believe in him in like a child's belief when taking a leap

My Thoughts My Vision My Life

I've no regrets for what i've done or not done today and in my life & Do things which i'll not regret today or tomorrow.

Given a choice i would choose exotic rather than luxury.

Chennai city drivers are very wise... they do not differentiate one another...  same apply for red and green signal.

It is so ironic when someone expects others to help him in some situations and he does nothing when others are in the same situation.

On the Day dravid retired some news channel said End of Dravidian era:  I hate when some news channel says end of dravidian era when there are 10 of millions of dravidians alive and achieving :)

We get leave for Diwali pongal which comes every year but there is no leave for Feb 29th which comes once in 4 year?

I wonder how much educated chennai city drivers are.. they know everything but only one thing they don't know is identifying colors especially when it come to differentiate red and green signal.

July 14th 2005 was a big day in my life, i left my home with bags packed to enter a new  phase of life,  first time away from home.  Sad day yet a big day, first step in to the unexplored part of life.

Badami, Aihole and Patadakal - Heritage Trip

2012 just born, we are nearing the first weekend of the this year, i wanted to go some were on the first weekend.  Hampi and Badami is pending in my list for long time now, so decided to go to one of these places, mailed my friends and we decided to goto Badami.   Badami is nearly 500km from bangalore, so driving is not a good option for a weekend, we decided to go by bus.  KSRTC runs a bus directly to Badami from bangalore called Vaibhav, never heard of this type in KSRTC before, description looked good, so booked the tickets for Myself, Arun and Isma.
Badami Cave Temple comple
Friday Evening myself and Arun started from Indiranagar, Isma planned to join us at Majestic directly.  Our bus Started from majestic at around 8PM, after nearly 11 hours journey, actually it should not taken this time, the coach we have choosen is the problem, KSRTC Vaibhav is not point to point it is meant for connecting remote places, so this bus took some long route and stopped at many places for 5 to 10 mins.  By the time we reached Badami we all are tired tough the bus is semi sleeper but it is little congested compare to regular buses, very less leg space.  As soon as we got down, we enquired is there any other buses available to Bangalore, SRS runs one bus from badami to bangalore we booked in that and canceled the KSRTC viabhav ticket, Vibhav may be good for short distance.

We checked in at KSTDC hotel in Badami, KSTDC is one of the best hotel available in Badami, they have around 16 rooms, we can book the rooms online using kstdc site or call and block the room using the number provided in the site.  It has a restaurant and tourism info center, so food and information need to roam around became easy.  After a small discussion with the guy in info center we sorted out the places.  In Badami there is group of cave temples, The Bhutanatha temple near by lake and around badami Aihole, Pattadakal, Banashankari, Mahakuta.  We decided to go around the places in Badami on 1st day and Aihole, Pattadakal on 2nd day.

Cave 1: Right to entrance
First we went Cave temples, these were carved on hill cliff during 6th-7th century.  We thought the place will be less crowded, since it is a normal weekend and new year weekend just passed, so thought not many will turn up but we were wrong, at morning 10AM only cave temple complex is crowed. We got our entry passes and climbed to the first Cave, it is dedicated to Lord Shiva and Planning of four caves is simple. The entrance is a verandah with stone pillars, a distinctive feature of these caves, leading to a columned mandapa – main hall and then to the small square shrine cut deep into the cave. There is one dancing Shiva with 18 arms on the right side entrance of the shiva cave, near by that a teacher was explaining the history and specialties about the statue to a group of school kids. There were many school groups at the cave temple but there are not like this group, they were taking some group photos, singing songs etc.,  It remembered our school days,  History classes, What would have happened if every history class was thought with demonstration like this, may be it would have became our favorite subject or atleast we would have remembered those subject. Spent some time and climbed towards cave 2.

Cave 2 and 3 is dedicated to Lord Vishnu,  cave 2 is Vishnu cave and cave 3 is Maha Vishu cave, wondering why what is the difference between Vishnu and Maha Vishnu? even we had the same doubt. We clarified that doubt by hearing to the session by the same school teacher, In cave 2 only Vishnu sculptures are there so it just Vishnu cave (Bachelor Vishnu ) and in cave 3 Vishnu with Mahalakshmi is there.

Cave 4 dedicated to Mahavir Jain,  which lies a little east of cave III. The sanctum is adorned by the image of Mahavira.  Scores of Jaina Thirthankara images have been engraved in the inner pillars and walls. In addition to it, there are some idols of Bahubali, Yakshas and Yakshis. Some scholars assign the cave to the 8th century.

Cave 4, Mahavir Jain

Badami cave temples are good example for unity in diversity and in India every divine path is respected equally since ancient days.   Not all sculptures are 100% complete in cave temple may be it was experimental site or the work is disrupted by war between chalukyas and pallavas.   One more thing is cave temples are opened only till 6PM and there is no proper lighting,  from town it look like another dark mountain after 6PM,  it will look good if there is some lighting.

After cave temples we walked to the Bhoothanatha temple by the lake, museum and returned to hotel.  On the we have booked on auto rickshaw for day 2 trip,  auto rickshaw is best mode of travel to aihole and patadakal.

Day 2 to be continued.

Megamalai - Traveler's Treasure

Finally the time came to execute our Megamalai trip,  we were supposed to go there for our 2010 year end.  I was on a pilgrim trip from 24th with family, 28th i've reached trichy, said good bye to the family and waited for Arun, who is leaving from bangalore to trichy to join me for Megamalai trip (Megamalai is in Theni dristict, Tamilnadu). Meghamalai is 489 kms from Bangalore and 559 kms from Chennai. Nearest town to Meghamalai is Chinnamanur 25km away,  Chinnamanur is well connect by buses from Madurai, Chennai and Bangalore.  From Chinnamanur, Meghamalai can be reached via local buses which leave in the morning at 4:30AM, 6AM and 10AM.  I met Arun at around 9PM and we had dinner at our favorite place Sangeetha's and started to Megamalai, via Madurai.   Arun's native village is on the way to Meghamalai, we stayed at his uncle's guest house at chinnamanur.  Reaching meghamalai is very difficult since there are only few buses from Chinnamanur to Megamalai.  We decided to go by uncles's pulser bike from chinnamanur.

Everyone said it will take 90mins atleast to reach megamalai, we tought it is just 25km why they are saying it will take so much time, we realized the truth later only.  First 10km on the plain road was cool, then we climbed on the hills, roads are very narrow and was in bad condition but the views and climate faded all cons. We have to drive 18 hair pin bends to reach meghamalai, the interesting thing is each hair bend is named after flowers like Alli, Malli, Kurinji etc.,  never seen hair pin bends named any were. Need to take extra measures in case self driving to meghamalai from chinnamanur,  road are very bad, some sharp turns on ridges and not advised to drive in nights.

After nearly 90mins drive we have reached a small dam, Meghamalai is rich in Flora and Fauna, Most of the places are planted with tea, meghamalai includes 6 small dams and each dam is surrounded with tea estates, near by the first dam we saw few houses, one guest house and a tea shop.  Meghamalai is still an unexplored place by tourists so there is no hotels for food or stay,  we have booked the government guest house and arranged food from a local Mr. Murugan (Mobile: +91 9442781748), prices are also moderate.  Murugan runs a tea shop next to the government guest,  he can arrange any south indian good if informed before.   We got know Murugan's shop and the guest house is on the next dam called Thoovanam Dam,  Thoovanam dam is the source for suruli falls in cumbum valley.

At around 12PM we have reached the government guest house near Thoovanam dam.  It was recently build and neatly maintained,  more over it is build in a very beautiful place surrounded by tea estates and thoovanam Dam.  We have confirmed our stay, food and started to walk around the shores of the dam and discussed why this place is not promoted?  What will happen if tourist started coming?  will we loose these beauty and peaceful atmosphere?

Meghamali is famous for wild elephants and some other wild animals,  Elephants and beauty of the estates inspired us to go there.  While reaching meghamalai we spotted only the tracks of elephants but we could not see any elephants,  we enquired the officer in the government office where we can find the elephants and do we need to take any local/guide with us? he asked us to go one estate in the early morning to find them, if someone else find the elephants i will inform you and no need of guide.  Generally they are not harmful until we disturb them.  Next day early morning we took the way suggested by the officer,  Meghamalai is so beautiful in the morning and with lush green estates and cloud touching peaks, amazing views.  We roamed around many estates still our luck didn't favored us, we have returned to guest house with sad faces.

Meghamalai is one of it's type,  mix of wildlife, tea estates around small dams and to add more it is not polluted yet.  Ideal for leisure walking, small hiking and elephant tracking. Meghamalai surrounded by lot of other beautiful destinations like Kurangani, kazhugumalai hiking,  Periyar tiger reserve and Thekkady.  We are planning to go to track elephants in meghamalai  again and to enjoy one more relishing weekend.
